It smells like plastic, because it’s plastic.

Interesting thread on the raw food forums.

I don’t own an Excalibur and this is the reason why. If you buy something that is plastic, you get plastic.. it really is that simple folks.  Heat + Plastic  is always something that has bothered me. Even those “oven safe” plastic trays that most “low calorie frozen dinners” are discarded before I cook them in a glass pan in the oven.  (fyi, I dont eat frozen dinners anymore, but when I did, I sure as heck did not use their plastic cooking containers.)

I have a 40 year old dehydrator I picked up on Ebay (mint in box), for $30,  that is completely metal with stainless steel screens.  No it doesn’t have a fan. Yes it gets hotter than an Excalibur and doesn’t have any of those fancy temp controls. You control the temp by pulling out the drawers. It makes kick-butt raw foods, essene breads and yummies like kale chips. I’ve also used it to sprout rice.

I’m sure like everything else, there are a lot of people out there that swear by their Excaliburs. And the commercial Excaliburs are stainless-steel, it’s just the consumer level product that is plastic.

I don’t think dehydrators need to cost a lot of money to get the job done. But who wouldn’t love to have one of their commercial stainless steel dehydrators?  :)

That being said, the one I have makes excellent food, sans the fan, fancy controls and other bling.
